10 Tips from haircare experts to eliminate frizzy hair
29.04.2022Are your locks jumbled and confused? This common hair problem affects many people. And it will only get worse as we age. There are hacks that can help curly hair get tangled, but there are also handy tips and tricks to combat frizz. Before you change your haircare routine, understand why frizz occurs.
Dr Sharon Wong is a consultant Dermatologist at The TrichoDerm and a hair and scalp specialist. She explains that frizzy hair is caused by the absorption water molecules from the air and the environment. Hair is porous. The hair’s ability to absorb water from the environment is determined by how dry it is.
Annabelle Kingsley, a trichologist, agrees and explains why hair tends to become frizzy in humid conditions. “Interestingly, atmospheric temperatures don’t have much effect on frizz. It can make your hair sweaty, and sweat has high water content. Frizzy hair can be caused by an increase in temperature.”
While humidity and other elements are beyond our control, you can easily prevent frizz by using anti-frizz products and steps while drying your hair. We asked top haircare professionals how to get rid frizzy hair at home.
How to remove frizzy hair
1. Choose a moisturizing shampoo
It is worth spending the money to get the best shampoo for your hair type. To nourish your hair, you should use a moisturizing shampoo. This will smoothen frizz as dryness can be the main reason hair becomes frizzy.
Camille Friend is a celebrity hairstylist who is also a HASK Brand Ambassador. She explains why choosing the right shampoo can make all the difference.
She explains that frizz in hair occurs when hair is dry and has a low moisture balance. Your shampoo and conditioner are what start to build the hair’s moisture. Choose a shampoo and conditioner that will instantly moisturize your hair.
It will ensure that your hair is properly treated from the first step. This will make the hair more able to absorb conditioners and stylers.
2. Do a blow dry
Curls and waves are all beautiful. If your hair is curly or wavy, it will likely look less neat or tamed. Michael Van Clarke, a celebrity hairdresser, explains why. “The hair may be healthy from root-to-tip but the curls or waves make the strands behave wildly and multidirectional. Cotton thread is different from cotton wool. The same material, but the thread has the fibres laid in line while the wool has a spaghetti mayhem. This will result in hair frizz.
To get your hair straight, blow dry it straight. A round bristle brush can make hair smoother. To prevent hair damage from heat-heating, use a round bristle brush. Hair damaged by heat will become frizzier and drier.
3. Change your hairstyle
Michael explains that the best hairstyle for frizzy hair depends on what hair type you have.
A bad haircut can make your hair look frizzier. The layers won’t be folded in if the ends aren’t perfectly balanced and cut. The result is a jagged look with the ends sticking out in an irregular way and a frizzy hairstyle. Hair will look drier and frizzier if it is weakened.
Talk to your hairdresser about the best cuts for you.
- Long layers are the best hairstyle for curly hair. Do not cut your hair too short. This will cause the curls to become wavy and brittle. Curly hair should be dried naturally so that the stylist can see the curl pattern and where it will sit.
- A straight cut will make your hair look more sleek. Feminine cuts can be less flattering.
- As the dead ends are removed, short hair can look healthier.
Be sure to choose a cut that fits your face shape, in addition to frizz. You might also consider these anti-aging hair cuts to brighten your face.
4. Chose a microfibre hair towel
It’s important to consider the towels you use, even though we are talking about fabrics. We know that microfibre towels work better for frizzy hair. After just a few use, we noticed a difference in our hair. These are well worth the investment.
Camille, a hairdresser, recommends that you dry your hair with a microfibre towel. It will absorb more water and dry faster. Microfibre towels can be used to dry frizzy hair because the fibres of regular bath towels are too stiff and large. This can cause hair to become brittle. This is especially important because hair is more fragile when it’s damp. Microfibre towels, which are soft and breathable, are the best for drying hair. They also prevent frizz from forming.
5. Protect your frizzy hair from humidity
Everyone has been on hot holidays and seen their hair go crazy like Monica from Friends. Have you ever wondered what makes hair frizzy in humid weather? Humidity is when there’s more moisture in the air. This can cause hair fibres to swell. This is why frizzy hair can be more common in summer and why it’s difficult to get rid of frizzy hair while on vacation in hot countries.
A properly moisturized hair will be less likely to absorb moisture from the air. You should always have extra emollients on hand, so make sure you pack nourishing oils and creams in your bag. To help the creams sink in, apply them to damp hair. You can keep a small bottle of hair oil in your bag for touch-ups while you are out and about. A sealing, humidity-prevention lotion will also be helpful – it creates a barrier that prevents moisture particles entering hair fibers.
6. Use a serum to calm the nerves
A little extra product can make a big difference in the shine of your hair. This doesn’t need to be difficult or time-consuming. You can find effective, hardworking treatments that do all the work. The serum will penetrate deeply into the hair and seal it, helping to prevent frizz. The best serum to treat frizzy hair depends on the type of hair, but John Frieda Frizz Elixe Original Serum has been widely praised and loved.
This is why it is so popular. It works and the price is great. Both my mum and mine have curly hair. I can remember her always having a bottle of this product in her purse growing up. Instant results, like taming frizz or sealing split ends in seconds. Before styling, wash your hair.
7. Get out of bed
About a third of our lives are spent in bed. It makes sense to consider how your hair is being affected by snoozing. You can get your hair frizzy by moving around in bed while you sleep.
Camille, a hairdresser, has a top tip. “Keep your hair twisted or braided to keep it styled and moisturized. This will help protect your hair and add shape to straight hairstyles.”
To curl your hair, you should sleep with your head in a high-top knot. This is also known as a “pineapple”. This will prevent curls from being damaged and increase volume at the roots. To give your curls a more delicate touch, you can use a sink, or satin scrunchie to achieve a smoother finish. Our next tip is…
8. Silk sleeping
Swapping your bedding can help protect your hair and make it more comfortable while you sleep deep. Camille has stated this: “Sleeping in a silk pillowcase will prevent hair from getting frizzy.”
Silky smooth fabric is great for hair. It won’t damage hair fibers and can help increase shine. It will prevent hair from getting split and breakage, and it will stop bed head. Silk is hypoallergenic, which means it helps to smoothen and prevent wrinkles from getting worse. Silk will prevent your night creams and oils from getting absorbed into the fabric. This makes them more effective.
Satin pillowcases are an option if you don’t have the money for the luxury. If you have a tight budget, they will give the same effect and work just as well.
9. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Dr Sharon Wong, a dermatologist and hair expert, says that the hair will become frizzier the drier it is. You should moisturize your hair with moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and treatments. You will see a difference in your hair’s health and appearance. Your hair will look softer, healthier, and more shinier if you take the time to moisturize it. Glossy hair will make you look younger, which is something we all desire.
Annabelle Kingsley is a resident Trichologist at Philip Kingsley. “Dry hair is more likely to break, and hair that has been damaged tends to look frizzy. Use a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment to hydrate your hair, such as Philip Kingsley’s iconic Elasticizer to prevent breakage. This product helps to make hair more elastic and stretchy. It stops hair from snapping or getting damaged.”
10. Protect your scalp
Although it is not very well-known, scalp talk can be a crucial part of keeping your hair happy. It’s like your hair is an extension of your skin. How hair is processed will determine how healthy it becomes.
The best way to fight weather-related frizz is to stay in a cool environment. Annabelle acknowledges that this is not practical. Apply products to your scalp that absorb excess moisture throughout the day. Dry shampoos that have scalp benefits and are lightweight are ideal for this purpose. They also soothe the scalp, boost your body, and can be used on a regular basis.
Give your scalp a massage after washing your hair. This will ensure that your hair is getting to the roots of the hair. This will prevent product buildup and prevent dry flaky scalps, which can cause dandruff. To restore your scalp’s health, you should invest in the best scalp scrubs and scalp massagers.
