8 Fall Skirt Trends You Will Love to Wear Instead of Your Pants

Don’t judge me for the things I’m about revealing, but I hate pants. It’s not a controversial stance, considering that most fashionistas swear by the power and versatility of great pants or jeans. But I stand by my convictions. Skirts are a wardrobe staple. They’re timeless, stylish, versatile, and comfortable. This bottom is a favorite of mine, and I’m sure others feel the same way. The fall/winter 2022 runway collection could be linked to the increase in sentimental feelings towards skirts.

No city was without skirts, from Paris to Milan to New York. As someone who wears skirts almost every day, I know that not all skirts can be worn equally. With so many options for skirts this season, it’s important to choose the ones that you like. Here are eight trends for fall that I found interesting. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a devoted skirt fan like me or just need some inspiration to get rid of your pants.

1. Maxi Skirts

Last fall and spring were all about miniskirts, but this season it will be all maxi. We saw collections that favored floor-sweeping skirts across the board. It wasn’t their length that made them stand out, but the emphasis on details made this trend stand out. We saw everything, from leather maxi skirts at Tod’s F/W22 collection to velvet versions at Christian Siriano.

Even though luxe fabrics were not the main focus, it was all about fitting. Ludovic De Saint Sernin had a fishtail-like maxi, and Y/Project had a slimmer, fitted version. It doesn’t matter what the details are, the maxi skirt is back, and it’s better than ever.

2. Knee-Length Skirts

This is what I have to say. I’m sure knee-length skirts can bring back many memories, not least the time they were required to cover their kneecaps as a teenager. The fall/winter 2022 runways showed us compelling examples of this silhouette. Designers took this “conservative style” and made it more risque by using tailoring. Miu Miu showed low-rise pleated skirts with exposed boxers on the runway, while Stella McCartney wore a saffron satin slip with matching bralette.

This staple was not only tailored, but also styled. Emilia Wickstead combined a simple crop top and a perfectly tailored, knee-length skirt. Maximilian, on the other hand, paired a chocolate brown suede skirt with bra, elbow gloves and over-the-knee booties. These collections are so trendy that anyone who thought covering your knees was uncool has never seen them.

3. Full Skirts

Full skirts have been a classic style since the 19th Century, but we have seen them most popular during periods of austerity, such as the Civil War, Great Depression and the ’50s. Given the current state of flux in the world, it makes sense that designers would gravitate to larger silhouettes. These skirts are not like previous iterations. This modern look can be attributed more to tailoring and color blocking than draping.

Bottega Veneta used leather fringe as an underskirt, while Prada used pleats to achieve a similar effect. Proenza Schouler, on the other hand, used color-blocking to create an illusion of volume. Tory Burch was my favorite, with full-Lurex shirts paired with contrasting, fitted wrap tops for a sharp, accentuated silhouette. Although this trend is “old”, each new iteration shows that it can be timeless (if done correctly).

4. Denim Skirts

Despite my doubts, fall is denim season. Many people love this time of the year. It may seem impossible to swap skinny jeans for a long skirt. Denim skirts are a trend that bridges the gap. This style has already gained a lot of popularity with fashion designers. You can see the fall/winter 2022 collections to confirm. This trend was easy to embrace, with miniskirts from Versace and midi skirts by Ami.

The details are what made this style unique. Diesel wore low-slung hemlines and hardware to create a vintage denim maxi. This trend can put aside any doubts you may have about skirts or denim.

5. Leather skirts

Leather is the perfect accessory for fall. There are many leather staples, but my favorite is the skirt. This is no surprise given the subject matter, but it is amazing how this style has remained relevant year after season. This is partly due to the constant creative reimagining of this classic.

Designers were able to go into the details and add little touches that elevated this piece from a magical piece to another level. Fendi showed a navy-blue, mid-calf leather skirt with chiffon panels. Chloe added stones to the waistline for a red skirt. Saks Potts added buttons to the bottom of a camel-leather skirt, while Nensi Dojaka’s tiniest ties held a cutout leather skirt together. Every detail looked like a star in the universe, brightly shining and stunning enough to be stared at for hours.

6. Woven Skirts

Knitwear is not new. Yet, designers somehow manage to make it seem so every fall. The woven-skirt trend that was all over the runways for fall/winter 2022 is a good example of this. Although knit skirt sets were popular a few years back, this season’s collection shows that they have evolved since their virality.

This evolution can be seen in the skirts’ hemlines as well as their density. Jil Sander featured gray wool skirts in mermaid-like silhouettes made of wool. Gabriela Hearst sent flared, salmon-hued skirts that reached above the ankle as she walked down the runway. Ulla Johnson also had Technicolor skirts in bright stitching with high slits. Rejina Pyo also had a very sleek, pale-yellow longline skirt that was paired with a matching vest. Each version seemed to reflect the evolution of our dressing styles over the years. This skirt trend is both chic and comfortable.

7. Party miniskirts

Miniskirts are still very popular, even though they were trendier last season. They were instead used for party dressing. It’s exciting to think about dressing up for a special night with someone you love, or just for yourself. This excitement was reflected in festive miniskirts on the runways for fall/winter 2022.

This season, unlike previous trends that focused on the shock value shrunken hemlines’ shock value, was all about sparkle. Miniskirts were adorned with unique-shaped sequins at Number 21 and vibrant saffron sparks covered a low, slung skirt at LaQuanSmith. This skirt was not only a show-stopper with sequins. Hardware was also a key component. Versace embellished a miniskirt with hot-pink crystal-adorned chains, while Coperni used mirrors to create a faux cutout effect. This miniskirt is so cute that it can make anyone want dance.

8. Skirts over Pants

Although I am a staunch stan for skirts, and believe that they outweigh pants, I understand why you are still hesitant about switching to this bottom this season. So don’t do it. Wear them both. Although it may seem a bit dated, the runways for fall/winter 2022 showed us that styling is key to making a skirt style work.

When trying to recreate this look, don’t be afraid of looking to the runway. This styling is a result of the importance of silhouettes. Rokh and Jacquemus paired skirts with more flair over slim trousers with ankle-split ends. Maryam Nassir Zdeh and DSquared2 wore miniskirts with black pants, paired with more layers for visual intrigue. These examples prove that you don’t need to choose between your favorite bottoms. If you are bold enough, you can wear both.
