A good trend is always a good thing, especially when it comes to beauty. Bixie haircuts? Yes, please. Are you looking for ocean nails? Sign us up. 1960s-inspired eyeshadow? Yes.

There are many simple styles to choose from, but all the experts we spoke with said that the main theme for 2022 is personalized beauty. It’s long gone are the days when we contour our faces in the same way, and use traditional “pretty” eyeshadow blends. They say that makeup application should be done in a way that makes one feel good.

“It’s obvious that makeup’s about feeling it and an emotional attachment to color,” Lisa Eldridge (celeb makeup artist, global creative director at Lancome) says. She says that people are wearing multiple colors on their faces without having to blend them in the traditional way.

Moody Makeup

Robin Black, a celebrity makeup artist predicts that 2022 will be a year of unconventional explorations into self. She believes this is because it’s more about individual expressions than perfection. She suggests that you let your mood dictate how makeup looks are created. She suggests that you try whatever comes to mind. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t even need to look like a tutorial, or take hours creating it. There are no rules, and no ‘how tos’.

Face-Lifting Techniques

People have discovered techniques for giving their face a lifted appearance thanks to viral videos on social media. TikTok users applied concealers from the outer corners to their eyes, all the way up to their eyebrows, giving the illusion of having wide-awake eyes.

Eldridge also shows a method that gives the illusion of having fuller lips. She applies lipliner with tact to create fuller, happier-looking lips. She suggests that you first apply concealer around the edges of your lips to guide you. Next, over-line the middle of your bottom lip. Then, draw up towards the corners and bring the liner in to the natural lip.

Bejewelled Eyes

The seeds of rhinestone-heavy makeup were planted by HBO’s Euphoria, and Pinterest believes that this dazzling trend will continue to grow. It reported that there was a 110 percent increase of searches for crystal eye makeup in the past year. This indicates that we will see more glitter, sequins and pearls in 2022.

High-Shine Lips

Serena van der Woodsen famously stated, “Lipstick lasts a lot longer, but gloss is much more fun.” Mario Dedivanovic (celebrity makeup artist, founder of Makeup By Mario), predicts that high-shine lipsticks will make a comeback in 2022.

He says, “It’s playful and pouty but can also have advantages when infused with skincare for treating lips.” For a bigger lips moment, add your favorite lip gloss to your bare lips. Dedivanovic recommends his Pro Volume Lip Gloss (22 USD, sephora.com).

Futuristic Embellishments

This makeup style is not about reliving the past. Instead, it’s about launching yourself into the future. Black says that this trend is all about being bold. The best part about this look? Faux tattoos, foils, and face stickers are simple to remove, so there’s no need for commitment.

Paintlab’s Eye Stickers ($10; urbanoutfitters.com), are a great way to add drama to your eyes.

Soft Sculpting

Although we’re all familiar with contouring, strong cheekbones and stark contrasts are no longer the norm. There’s a huge difference between camera-ready contouring, and real life. Dedivanovic says that the beauty industry realized there was a better way. He also added that the Soft Sculpt Collection was created because of that. I’m certain we’ll see more of it in beautiful, skin-loving formulas and textures.

Kitten Eyeliner

Eldridge predicts this baby cat-liner will be the most popular makeup product in the coming year. She says it is very youthful because it is lighter and more pulled-back than a cat-eye.

Danielle Kimiko Vincent is a celebrity brow artist who founded KIMIKO. She says that eyeliner will not be as thick and heavy, but it will be much more thin. It should be applied in the middle of your eyes and then be drawn outwards. This creates a natural lift. Eldridge recommends using the same powder as your eyeliner to give the tip a natural shadow.
