Here are our thoughts after trying Summer Fridays’ first-ever makeup product

We love full-coverage foundations but sometimes we just want a slight enhancement to our complexions. A skin tint is a lighter, buildable, sheerer option to full-coverage foundations. The Summer Fridays Sheer Skin Tint is a favorite of the our team and it is lightweight. Six of our employees put the new dew enhancer, which is the brand’s first venture into makeup, to the test and they all got glowing results.

Summer Fridays is a very popular brand in skin care, so it was only natural that the brand infused the Sheer Skin Tint using skin-nourishing ingredients. This ultra-light formula is for sensitive skin types. It contains a small amount of redness-calming Tiger grass (also known as Cicada) and treats it to an extra dose. Ellen Marmur MD, a New York City-based board certified dermatologist, previously stated that Cica is believed to soothe and heal irritated skin.

This fluid formula contains two skin-conditioning ingredients, hyaluronic and squalane. Dryness is not an issue. New York City’s board-certified dermatologist Doris Day, MD previously stated that “Hyaluronic Acid is great for holding water and giving skin resistance and firmness.” Samantha Fisher, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, stated that squalane acts as an emollient. It also “aids with skin-care issues where the skin barrier has been disrupted and transepidermal loss is an issue.”

This tint is a great choice for skin-care benefits. What about its skin-tinted properties? Its inky texture is what I am obsessed with. It can be applied immediately to dry and left behind a thin layer of color. This can easily be added to layers for greater coverage.

I used shade 4, and applied two layers with both my fingers. This was just enough to soothe my little bouts of rosacea. My sensitive skin also didn’t feel irritated nor weighed down throughout my day. It’s an easy way to get dewy skin.

Rachael Edwards is social media manager. She has a preference for products with medium-to-heavy coverage. She also believes that two-layer coverage is the best method to achieve coverage. She says that the skin tint gives her a radiant glow and enough coverage to cover any dark circles or period breakouts.

Its durability and no-budge performance impressed her. She said that the product did not break down or move after two hours. This is an important feature for her combination skin type.

Kassidy Silva is associate director of social media. She wore shade 1 and added a light concealer (she’s using SKINN Foundation+ Concealer in 1W). This gives her a more natural finish and provides a little more coverage. She says that even after trekking through the city during a scorching summer day, my skin looked healthy and hydrated when I returned to home.

Silva wasn’t the only one to experiment with adding another product to enhance coverage. Sam Escobar, site director, combined shades 1 and 2 to conceal their undereyes. However, the skin tint helped even out their chins.

Escobar also suggests another tip for adding coverage. This is a trick that Sable Yong, former editor of Allure, learned from Katie Jane Hughes: “Put the product on the backside of your hand and apply it with a dense foundationbrush. Then take your (freshly washed!) hands.” To remove any excess formula, gently press the product onto your skin with your hands.

Jesa Marie, senior editor, also tried shade 4. She says she is a big fan of the product’s dew-enhancing finish. It makes her look like she just woke from the most blissful nap of her life. Calaor points out that the product only provided three layers of coverage to achieve her desired results.

Yes, there is consensus that this tinted formula gives you a very dewy complexion. But, one of our main concerns was the 10-shade range. This could benefit from some fine-tuning. Sarah Hoffmann, commerce director, says, “I’m shade 2 in the shade range and I’m far too pale to be 20% of any complexion product’s ranges of skin tones.”

We have encountered this issue with products that are lighter in complexions, such as skin tints or tinted moisturizers. However, the brand stated in a press release that each shade is intended to be “flexible” for a range of skin tones.

They are very versatile considering how sheer the formula is and that Calaor’s light-medium skin with neutral undertones and Calaor’s golden complexion both fall under the same shade. However, all testers agreed that the shade selection could be expanded.

Hoffmann enjoyed the formula despite all this. Hoffmann claims she was able to get the best coverage from the formula by using her “little mad scientist trick”, which allows for more coverage in a very sheer formula such as this one. “I start by messily spreading a thick-but-not-ridiculous layer of this tint over my face with my hands before going in and blending with a damp Real Techniques sponge to make it look seamless and take away any excess product,” she explains.

Is the Summer Fridays Sheer Skin Tint a success or failure? Our staff conclude that it is a great first step in makeup for the skin-care brand. The silky, dewy formula feels and looks like a dream on our skin. Although the shade range could be extended, the formula’s texture and conditioning ingredients make it a compelling choice to purchase this second-skin-like skin product.
