Short Dive into Keratin Treatments
12.05.2022Keratin treatments, just like contouring and balayage highlights are another hot topic in the beauty industry.
It’s normal for some hair textures and types to be more susceptible to frizz. However, if you prefer a smoother look, a keratin treatment might be worth your consideration.
We asked Rebecca Hiele and Abraham Sprinkle to give us a crash course on all you need to know about the treatment. The most important part is how to keep your hair healthy long after you leave the salon.
What is a Keratin Treatment?
Sprinkle says that keratin treatments are used to fill in the hair’s porosity. Too much hair can cause tangles and frizz. The treatment restores the hair’s keratin content, which is often lost through ageing and chemical treatments.
Hiele says that keratin treatments seal in the protein with controlled heat. This gives hair a smooth, frizz-free look.
What should you expect from a Keratin Treatment?
Keratin treatments were traditionally used to straighten hair and remove frizz. There are many options on the market today, such as Goldwell’s Kerasilk smoothing treatment, which can eliminate frizz and not alter your hair texture.
Hiele says that many treatments were removed from the market because of this. Hiele says that a smoothing treatment must work but also need to be safe.
It can be tailored to your hair depending on the type of treatment that you choose. You can also go straight if you prefer.
What hair types should get a Keratin treatment?
All hair types and colors are safe with these treatments. If you are a blonde, consult your stylist before you take the plunge.
Sprinkle says that some treatments with glycolic acid can change the hair’s color. This is why it is important to have a consultation. Look for a salon that offers a treatment for blonde hair.
Hair textures can be customized, as Hiele mentioned. You can choose to have your hair completely straightened or smoothened by Goldwell.
How long does a Keratin treatment last?
A treatment typically lasts three months. However, it all depends on the formula. Goldwell offers two options. Kerasilk Keratin smoothing, which can last three to five months, and Kerasilk Kerasilk Frizz service. This is a faster service that will give you frizz-free hair for four to six weeks.
What are the steps to take after undergoing post-Keratin treatment?
It depends on the treatment that you receive. Some formulas don’t allow you to wash or tie your hair for 48 hours after the initial appointment.
Once you are clear to use your shampoo or conditioner, it may be time to look closely at the ingredients. Sprinkle says that sulfate-free formulas will ensure long-lasting results. “A shampoo made by a manufacturer will prolong its life because it doesn’t counteract any treatment.”
You can continue your normal haircare routine or indulge in a same day blowout for treatments that don’t require any downtime. Talk to your stylist about the details before you go. This will ensure that you are familiar with how to maintain it.
Are At-Home Keratin Products able to give you the same results?
A keratin-smoothing shampoo can add some keratin protein, but it will not be as effective and lasting as a salon treatment.
