1. Dress to Impress Yourself

Last night, my Girlfriend and me had a really interesting conversation over pre-dinner drinks.

The topic of self-improvement came up. We talked about how she was inspired by something that I was doing and how it was motivating me to do more. She was enthusiastic about it even though it was selfish to think only about herself.

I said no. It would be selfish not to acknowledge that you can and should work on something, such as your fitness, career, or social skills. She is working on herself to improve her relationship with us. This is the exact opposite of being selfish.

There are many things that dating experts disagree about. They may disagree on whether or not to use dating apps or what to say to a first date. But there is one thing they all seem to agree on: It is worth improving yourself to be a better person and make it worthwhile. Get in shape, get a better job, and enjoy your hobbies.

These are all things that must first be about you. This is the biggest error that a lot of guys make with regards to trends. It’s a race to be the first to get the latest trend (and Instagram about it). They don’t have a real style, because they only care about what other people think and not how it looks for themselves.

2. A classic look is the best style insurance policy

Contrary to what a lot of people think, I love trends. For example: I love a crazy burger. It can be made with spiced lamb and a tahini sauce. Make it into a surf & turf by topping a beef patt with tempura-fried lobster. A crazy burger is something you can’t eat all the time. Sometimes, the most bizarre ideas end up sucking.

Fashion trends keep it exciting and fresh. Style is all about style. Paul Newman’s photo of himself 50 years ago looks great. It’s also why Givenchy is so popular among entertainers today.

While trends are great for occasional occasions, a classic look is the best style policy long-term.

3. Wabi Sabi

When I began my menswear business, one of the main reasons I chose to design leather jackets was because I love the way leather looks over time. It wrinkles. Softer. It loses its dye.

Nothing is more beautiful than a leather jacket someone has owned for many decades. It tells a tale.

This is what the Japanese refer to as “wabi-sabi”, or beauty in imperfection. This is known as “patina” in the industry. Men are often too concerned with keeping their clothes looking new. Make sure they are always clean. Every wrinkle should be removed.

There will be times when you need to keep your clothes clean and neat. A business suit. Your wedding tuxedo. It’s easy to be happy if you take the time to care enough about clothes and live in them.

It’s essential to maintain the quality of items you spend your hard earned money on. Start with high quality goods. Relax. Sir Hardy said, “Buy clothes with intelligence, put on clothes with care, and forget about them.”

A man who is constantly changing his clothes can be seen as unattractive and not stylish. He might pull out a damp cloth to wipe his shoes or avoid a walk in the rain with a woman because he doesn’t want his leather jacket to wet.
