The main reason of Stranger Things Season 4 Delay
30.05.2022Fans haven’t seen a new season in almost three years. But why is season 4 taking so long? In the past, Stranger Things seasons have taken a long time to produce. After the season 2 premiere, season 3 was released two years later. Stranger Things season 4 has a two-year wait to release after the premiere of season 2.
Shawn Levy, executive producer of Stranger Things, spoke out about the season 4 delay in a Collider interview. He not only called Stranger Things season 4 “the most ambitious,” but also provided some interesting details about the Stranger Things creative team’s scale. These safety protocols are required by COVID and have been applied to every film and television set currently being shot. Levy also mentioned these rules when he spoke about Stranger Things season 4.
According to interview, the main causes of the delay between Stranger Things season 3 and 4 seem to be a combination new COVID protocols slowing down the overall process and Shawn Levy and Ross Duffer remaining the only producing/directing team behind this acclaimed series. This means that their resources are being stretched more thin. Levy also mentions that he and his brothers, the Duffer brothers, still manage almost all aspects of production. The formula-breaking Stranger Things season 4, which takes place in three different locations, means that the attention of the trio is equally divided. Add to that the slowdown required by COVID safety protocols and you can see why Stranger Things season 4 is delayed.
Stranger Things season 4 began with COVID protocols but was halted 1 month after it started production. The set needed to adapt to the new season filming with the COVID safety protocols. Filming resumed in September 2020. It’s not hard to see why Stranger Things season 4 has required more filming time.
Levy also mentioned in his interview that because he and the Duffer Brothers still closely supervise every aspect of production on Stranger Things it is likely that the trio is not evenly distributed across all elements of production. Levy described the trio as an artistic group that “lays hands on all the stuff ourselves,” in reference to the hands-on nature the production. Stranger Things season 4 has been delayed so long because it is ambitious and auteur-focused.
The Stranger Things season 4 will be huge in scale and set up the Stranger Things series finale, despite the delay. It features three new compelling storylines and a long runtime (each episode is more than an hour long). Despite being aware of the delay caused by this magnitude, Shawn Levy, executive producer, seems to be confident that the new season will prove to be the best. If the trailer for Stranger Things season 4 and the ambition it embodies are any indication, Levy’s optimism seems justified.
