As we age, the skin under our eyes can begin to look darker and sink. With time our skin will lose volume and become more brown/black. However, injectables are available if you want to keep your skin looking younger. Tear trough filler is the best for filling in the under-eye area. We asked Melanie Speed, a registered nurse, and Dr. Corely Hartman, a board-certified dermatologist, all about tear trough Filler. Find out if this popular cosmetic treatment is right to you.

What is Tear Trough Filler?

Tear trough filler, also known as Juvederm and Restylane filler, is a type dermal filler that uses hyaluronic to restore volume. Speed says that under-eye filler can be transformative if used correctly by the right doctor. Speed says that by expertly placing HA filler, it’s possible to smoothen under-eye hollowing as well as correct the tear trough. This gives the undereyes volume and balance, giving them a youthful, healthy appearance. Although it is not known how many patients chose to have under-eye filler, it is clear that volume-replenishing injectables remain highly sought-after. Hartman says that interest in this procedure has increased significantly over the past year. Hartman says that patients have been looking for minimally invasive ways to improve their appearance, especially in the upper eye. “Masks have increased the importance and importance of the eyes,” he said.

Benefits of Tear Trough filler

There are many benefits of the filler. Here are just some of them:

  • Temporary refreshment of the under-eye area
  • Temporary undereye plumpness
  • Temporary brighter appearance

Under-eye filler can be used to instantly rejuvenate the under-eye region. Hartman states that it makes patients appear like they are getting ten hours sleep each night, so even though they aren’t, they can pretend they are. Under-eye filler has the wonderful property of instantly plumping the eye area, which helps reverse sunkenness. Because there are fewer shadows that cause sunken eyes, your eyes will appear brighter. Hartman says that the dermal filler in your tear trough replaces the volume, which causes correction of a shadow and darkness no eye cream can ever correct. Hartman claims that the filler is very stable and lasts for at least one year under the eye.

However, not all of us are a good candidate. Hartman states that people with lower lids should be advised that a blepharoplasty might be more suitable for them than filler. Speed states that patients younger than 60 years old are most likely to experience the best results and satisfaction from under-eye filler. Anyone with excess skin or fat under the eyes is more likely to be able to have surgery.

Does it hurt to inject a filler?

It may seem like a terrible idea to let needles penetrate your skin. Speed says it seems more painful than it is. She says that the majority of her patients find it completely comfortable. Speed says the filler product contains lidocaine to help numb the area. She also mentions that there are some offices in Las Vegas that offer Pronox gas for an extra fee.

How to prepare for the Tear Trough Filler

Booking with the right injector is the most important part of under-eye cosmetic filler preparation. Hartman suggests that you find a dermatologist who has performed many of these procedures, and is familiar with the anatomy of this complex part of your face. Hartman says, “There are many blood vessels, nerves packed into an area that consists only skin, muscle and bone with very few subcutaneous tissue to hide imperfections.” Hartman also points out that under-eye filler is still a relatively new trend. However, Hartman states that in the last six months, one filler product has been approved for this area. He says that while it’s a safe procedure it is not one to experiment with.

Speed recommends that you avoid injectables for two weeks before your appointment. This includes no aspirin, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or fish oil, melatonin and vitamin E, turmeric, chondroitins, glucosamines, green tea, and so on. You should always consult your doctor before stopping taking blood thinners.

The recovery process will be helped if you start oral Arnica montana tablets at least a week before your treatment.

The procedure

After cleansing the eye area, you will apply a topical numbing cream to prepare it for injection. After the cream has had time to set, your injector can begin injecting. Hartman explains that a small injection is done with an introducer needle to allow for microcannula entry. “The cannula will be inserted and product administered.” Hartman states that mild pressure is normal, but there is not pain. He says that the area feels like it is at the dentist, and there is no discomfort.

Botox vs. Tear Trough Filler

Botox and filler are often confused, even though they do two different things. Botox is a filler that replaces volume lost. Botox freezes the muscles to treat and prevent lines. Filler is instant, unlike Botox, which can take up to two weeks for to set. Speed states that no other procedure can provide the same improvement to the under-eye and middle of the faces as fillers. Speed says that while a good eye cream and daily sunscreen are essential, HA fillers provide instant, apparent results.

Potential side effects include injection pain, swelling and redness. These side effects can be avoided by visiting a skilled injector who will follow the preparation steps. It is important to book with a qualified provider. Hartman states that inexperienced hands can cause serious injuries, including blindness, nodules and bruising.

Under-eye filler is a great cosmetic option if you have sunken undereyes and want to reduce the loss of volume, and consequent darkness.
