TOP 9 Beauty Trends to Follow in 2022
10.12.2021We meant what we said when we said that we would experiment more with beauty in 2021. The shag haircuts and Y2K makeup revival, as well as the ever-interesting TikTok trends would have made 2021 boring. We are ready to experiment even more in 2022 with our newfound confidence. According to the professionals, these are nine beauty trends we believe will be big next year: statement blush to peekaboo highlights
1. ALL THINGS GLITTER
The Y2K aesthetic was all the rage this year, and will continue to be so well into 2022 (because nostalgia is real). Is there a throwback trend that is really on the rise? Glitter, glitter, and more glitter. “Glitter has been a popular trend for the past several decades. Although jeweled appliques will still be in fashion next year, we’ll see even more glitter next year,” Sandra Saenz, a Dallas professional makeup artist, says. “At LaQuanSmith’s SS’22 fashion shows, we saw a lot of glitter on models’ eyes, which matched beautifully with the collection.” There are many shadow sticks and palettes that can help you get the job done.

2. LINED LIPS
Well-defined lips are another trend inspired by the ’90s that is making a comeback. We don’t like overlining our lips, but we do love enhancing our natural shapes in 2022. Manuel Espinoza, a StyleSeat Pro and makeup artist says that the classic look of lined lips with a neutral lipstick and coordinating liners creates the illusion of fuller lips.
Espinoza’s tip on how to apply the correct amount of liner? Apply your lipstick first. Do this and you will be able to see the natural touch points of your lips on top and bottom. Next, take a liner that is a shade darker than your natural lipstick color. The darker the liner, it will give you more definition. To finish the look, apply the lipliner.

3. DOUBLE-WINGED LINNER
We established in 2021 that the traditional cat eye is a thing of the future. A reversed cateye was hugely popular this year. We’ll be taking it up in 2022 with a double -liner look. Celebs such as Dua Lipa and Doja Cat have already embraced the look, so this will be a great eye look to try. Eyeliner is a classic beauty product, but doubling or tripling the amount of graphic lines is a recent trend. This look is more dramatic and encourages color play than the traditional, single-colored liner we have seen in the past,” says Saenz. For a brightly coordinated look, the makeup artist recommends pairing colors of blue, green, or white.

4. STATEMENT BLUSH
Blush is quickly becoming our favorite step of our makeup routine. Saenz says that people are looking at blush with a more creative lens. They’re playing with colors and placing them to create unique looks. For a more defined look, blush is not only applied to the apples of the cheeks or across the nose. It’s also being applied to the highest points of the face, such as above the cheekbones.

5. HIGHLIGHTS FROM PEEK-A BOOO
2020 was the year for complete color transformations. 2021 was all subtlety. Highlights made a big return, whether you tried the balayage or money piece look. Peek-a-boo highlights, a look that has been popular since the early 2000s, is still very popular. “The peek-a-boo highlight trend will continue to grow in 2022. These highlights can be a fun way of achieving a dimensional look and adding pop to your hair without having to maintain traditional highlights,” says Laura Gibson, master colourist at Bomane Salon Los Angeles. It will be more blended this time. These highlights won’t be as starkly contrasted.
6. MODERN DAY MULLET
We were surprised and delighted to see Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, and Demi Lovato rock chic mullets this season. The polarizing “business in front, party at the back” look is still popular, but it’s back in a fashion-forward manner. The mullet is a classic look that has been around for ages. The look is evolving with soft layers that blend it from front to back, says Kamara Brown, hairstylist, and StyleSeat Pro. They are easy to use and maintain, but they can be a fun way of changing up your look. Mullets are also being worn in a variety of ways by many people.
7. LONG LAYERS
Many people let their hair grow when salons were closed because of the pandemic. 2022 will be the year of longer hair. Next year, we will see the return of long, flowing layers from the 90s. Matt Swinney is a hairstylist who also serves as the global creative director at RUSK. Swinney suggests applying volumizing mousse to wet hair and then blow drying it in sections. “Wrap your hair in Velcro rollers while it is still hot. Let it cool down for five to ten minutes, then let it air dry. Then, release the Velcro rollers to reveal large, loose curls that showcase your layers.”
8. TEXTURED HAIR
In 2022, ruffled waves that almost seem wet are making a big splash. You need inspiration? Megan Fox, Jennifer Lopez, and Margo Robbie are all masters of this look. Charlene Valledor, president at SOS Beauty, says that textured hair will be the new norm in 2019. Styled curls and waves can be achieved with a variety of products. A mousse or styling gel that gives your hair the “damp” look is a must-have product.

9. GENDERFLUID BEAUTY
This trend, which is fueled by Gen Z, is already on the rise. But we see it growing even more in 2022. Valledor says that beauty products such as lipstick, blush and eyeshadow will be more gender-inclusive. Although makeup does not have rules about who can wear it, brands are encouraging more people to use them and moving away from gender-conforming labels. We Are Fluide and Malin+Goetz, as well as TooD Beauty, have been a major influence. Even celebrities like Harry Styles are expanding their product offerings to all sexes and genders.
