TikTok is Crazy for Purple Blush – Here’s Why and How to Wear it
08.12.2021Were we surprised to see TikTok practically reinventing our makeup routine for this year? Think: Reverse cat eye style, foundation saving hack, monolid eyeliner trick. It’s not even close. It’s even more interesting to see how the platform made us fall back in love with classics in a new way. Blush is a great example. We’re all familiar with the pinks, browns and occasional peachy shades for summer. But there’s a subtle shade called purple blush that’s making a comeback on TikTok’s top.
Sandra Saenz is the KVD Beauty global veritas ambassador. We wanted to know more about how you can add it to your next style.
WHY IS PURPLE BLUSH SO COMMON?
TikTok is all you need. Quick searches on the app yielded over 16.2m views. Tiktoker Rachel Rigler, the person to test the color back in August, was the first. These results attracted over 2 million views. Commenters asked, “Does this suggest that I should try purple blush?”
The platform sees many trends change in a matter of days or weeks. The search for purple blush is still going strong with creators such as Yashora, Darcei and Alessandro testing the product well into fall. It’s not surprising that this trend is continuing, considering the fact that we have all been more adventurous with our makeup over the past two years. You can see the rise in neon colors, bright liners, and Y2K-inspired makeup.
HOW TO WEAR PURPLE BLUSH
Blush brightens the skin and highlights your best features. How can you wear purple blush specifically? Saenz recommends the traditional route of applying the blush directly to the apples of your cheeks. She adds, “It gives your complexion a really pretty flushed effect.”
You don’t have to stick with the traditional method of applying blush if you do not want. Apply purple blush to your eyes, nose, and cheeks. Blend it into your hairline. This is where highlighter and bronzer are usually applied. She says, “This application style gives cheekbones a cool, snatched vibe with a slight 80s vibe.”
Here are some more tips:
If you want a bolder look, you will need to apply three to four more blush dots and then blend. If you prefer a more natural look, a cream blush or liquid blush is a good choice. They are easy to apply, diffuse the pigment and create a subtle, light finish.
FINDING THE RIGHT PURPOSE BLUSH FOR YOUR SKUNK TONE
It’s finally time to get on the purple blush train. The good news is that anyone can wear the color and that there are many ways to do it. @color.nerd, creator of the trend on TikTok, explains that purple is cool and can be used to correct warm tones such as reds, oranges, yellows, and reds. A swipe of purple blush can make dull skin look brighter.
There are some guidelines to follow:
- Consider purple pastels if you have fair to light skin. We love Clinique Cheek Pop Blush In Pansy Pop, Melt Cosmetics Blush Light, and Lorac in Aura.
- For medium-tan skin, choose violet or mauve shades. Glossier Cloud Paint, Nars In Aroused, and Fenty Beauty Cheeks out Freestyle in Drama Cla$$ are our favorites.
- Deep purples are best for dark skin types, such as plum and berry. Nudestix Nudies Matte Blush & are our favorites. Bronze in Moodie Blu and Tower28 Beauty BeachPlease lip + cheek cream Blush Sun-Kissed Berry in Tower28 Beauty ModCon Liquid-Gel Blush, in Glasscade, by KVD Beauty ModCon Blush, in Glasscade, and Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush, in Matte Deep Berry in Rare Beauty.
Now, we’ve tried our fair share TikTok hacks as well as viral beauty products in the name journalism. Like many TikTok creators we were skeptical about purple blush. (It wasn’t until last year that blush was even something we considered.)
Fenty Beauty Cheeks out Freestyle in Drama Cla$$ was a great choice for us as someone with medium-tanned skin. We began with very small amounts, then we built up and blended until we were happy with the results. It looked amazing on the skin, let us tell you. It makes it look natural. This blush is a universal favorite for all skin types and we can see why. It blended well and we didn’t look like a clown the rest of the time.
Are you still unsure whether to get a purple blush or not? Saenz’s final words are: “Life is too short to be afraid of what the future holds.”
It appears that TikTok has once again won in the beauty category.
